GTO TESTING

Group Testing Officer Test:

This test is held to discover the qualities of a candidate in a group. As opposed to testing individuals in isolation group testing attempts to evaluate individuals in the context of a group. The role of group testing in the Service Selection Boards is to determine an individual’s ability to function in a group and based on this functional capacity, to ascertain his actual and potential level and to assess his suitability for the Armed Forces. Group testing as a technique of assessment differs from other psychological groups tests, like Intelligence Tests administered to a group while the former promotes interplay and interaction in a group in order to facilitate the assessment of the individual, the latter prohibits such interaction at the time of testing even though the tests are administered to a group. The group testing technique therefore assesses an individual in the context of an experimental group, which is subjected to a considerable physical and mental stress. From this, one seeks to observe and evaluate an individual’s group effectiveness or in other works the sum total of an individual’s contribution to the group and to the task.

The Test Scene:

Test under GTO technique is  held in two ways. They are

INDOOR TASKS
 OUTDOOR TASKS
Let us see the procedures, rules and objectives of all these tests individually in detail.

1) GROUP DISCUSSION:

First of all we have to focus on what a group discussion is. Group discussion is a sharing of thoughts and ideas among a group of persons resulting in a common thought ,idea or a solution. The most important thing we must understand here is that the group discussion is entirely different from a debate where each candidate try to prove himself correct. In discussion candidate has to give their own ideas and the reasoning of why they think so.

 The Test Scene:

For this test,The group of candidates are allowed to sit together at U-table in a hall along with the the GTOs who will be noting the performance of each candidates.Once all the candidate is comfortable and settled one of the GTO will give a list of topics out of which candidates have to select a topic to be discussed. In this scenario the candidates have to discuss within themselves to choose the topic which most of them are agree.  After telling the chosen topic to the GTO, he gives time to think about the topic for few minutes(usually 3 to 4 minutes).  Then after that he orders the candidates to start the discussion.

Once the discussion is over, the GTo will give another topic which will be the compulsory one. Here also, some time will be provided to think about the topic.
Each discussion goes for about 10-15 minutes.

What are the objectives of Group Discussion?

There is a need of group discussion to discover a group behavior of a person. No one in this world is perfect, but few of tending to perfect may together be the perfect. This forms the  for this test.In a defence career there will be many situation where officers have to thin, discuss and decide the action plans. At that time, there arises a need of suitable and healthy discussion. So the candidates are checked here for their suitability in this regard.
so the GTO is searching for following qualities in you,
  • Communication Skill:This is the most important thing at G.D since the heart of the G.D is effective communication.  To be an active member of the group, he should be able to put his points before the group and should make the group to agree his/her points.  For this the candidate communication should be effective(able to influence the group).
Effective communication results in getting the attention of the group member.  If you communicate well, then your point will be given a weightage and everyone will discuss around your point.  So you are becoming the center of attraction.
The main thing after becoming the center of attraction is, After the group seems to conclude about your previous point, try to give a new point in relevant to the previous one so that the group tries to hold that point and start to discuss.
  • Listening Abilities:  As i told how important the communication is equally important to patient listening.  A patient listener gives more quality point rather than the continuous speaker.  Since it is easy to give quality point if we are an active listener rather than talking continuously.  In the whole process, the quality only matters and not the quantity.  How much we speak is not a matter, how much depth we speak about the subject is the matter.

  •  Leadership and Coordination with the group members:This is the heart for an Army officer.  Since he will lead the group, so he should have good leadership quality i.e. able to coordinate with the group.
In G.D leadership quality is analyzed by the G.T.O by noticing the
    • Listener of the group,
    • Helping the weak member to talk,
    • Supporting to the good point of the group member,
    • Able to analyze and prioritize the good point from the members,
    • Explaining others point by giving his own example,
    • Able to overcome his equally competent candidate with his depth of knowledge and communication skills.
  • Who is the real Leader :  A real leader is not the person who is initiating first by fighting with others.(i.e. starting the discussion in an urge mentality).A real leader is the person who keeps himself cool, and he will start if no body of the group does not have knowledge about the topic to start or guts to start.  He will volunteer himself to start the discussion by giving his valuable points and start the discussion.  He is the real leader in G.D.  The board also likes this leaders only.

  • Depth of Knowledge in the given topic:while talking in discussion as i told earlier the quality is matter and not the quantity.  To be a good participant in GD we should have a depth, sound knowledge in the given topic.  To get these depth knowledge see various discussion at national news channels such as NDTV, CNN IBN etc.  Also read national daily news papers such as the Hindu etc.  So you will increase your knowledge day by day.  It is a long term process but results good in GD.  Also be crispy in putting the point.  Clarity of thought is important.
  • Sharing of knowledge to the group members:In GD, to make the discussion in a smooth manner sharing of knowledge plays a important role.  Since every candidate will give a point and expects that the group should stick over his point.  So it will be a non-co operative discussion.  So to make it fruit full, give supportive points to the members such as motivating them by sharing our  knowledge i.e. giving our own examples to their point.  By these activity we are becoming active member of the group, supportive and helping nature, showing our deepness of knowledge and making the discussion interesting.
  • Running the group parallel to the given point:If you were in the first three of the discussion by giving a good point with an example.  Also any of the group member agree your point and talk means, At that time you should run parallel to that person by giving more supportive points to him.  So if both of you are in the same stream the weak members will automatically stick to both of you.  In this scenario all are talking around your point.  So it is also an important thing.
Two Important parts of the G.D:-
  1. Initialization
  2. Conclusion
Initialization:-

Initialization gives either two things in GD.  It will be a King Crown in your head if you start/initiate the G.D very well. i.e. Everyone will agree to your initialization.  Else it will be a indelible remark over you if you stammer at the starting point of G.D.  So if you know very well about the topic just start the discussion confidently.  Else listen to others and summarize your point then trigger it to the group.
But what i suggest you friends is not to speak first. If you have a very depth knowledge of the subject  and you have a very clear insight of the topic then you surely go for first to speak but in other case never rushy to the discussion and speak first for the sake of speaking. Why i am saying this  because if you start speaking without thinking about the topic you will surely find yourself stuck some where and that will surely go against you and also you will loose your hold over the discussion. So what i suggest  is that let the others start  the discussion and listen to them very carefully and at the same time make your points and decide which side you have to speak only after listening to the both sides of the subject.
Always keep in mind that speaking much without strong point will  do nothing but speaking strong points will take you in.

Now if you are strong in the subject and confident about your side, then how should you proceed?

There are several techniques in the initiation of group discussion.  They are as follows:-
  • Real time example initiation technique:-
This is the common initiation technique followed by many in the GD.In this technique discussion is started using a well known example of  the subject not only focusing the subject strength but also at the same time clearing the side of the speaker. This technique shows the awareness of the candidate about the common issues related to the subject.

  •  Defining about the topic technique:-
This is very basic initiation technique followed by most of the persons in G.D..I prefer more this technique because this technique shows the knowledge of the candidate  of the subject. Not only this, the technique also helps the weak members of the group to understand the subject and since the are little known to the subject the try to circulate around you points which gives you a stronghold over the discussion.

  • Interrogatory type technique:-This is very interesting technique followed the few bold candidates in G.D. i.e. asking interrogatory type things such as what, when, who, how like question about the given topic. I strongly recommend you not to use this technique because this technique is very dangerous until used at right place in right manner. This technique may give either good or bad impression on the G.T.O.

Conclusion:-

In day 3 of Group Discussion they dont expect to conclude the G.D.  The conclusion is expected only in M.P.E  i.e. Military Planning Exercises.  So to conclude the G.D. dont stick with your points till the end.  Instead of that try to summarize all the important points of others by mentioning their chest numbers and also add your view with that.  Also try to add your own solution for the issues which you discussed in the Group Discussion Session.  As it shows your leadership qualities.(since the person finds the solution for the problem is the real leader).

TIPS FOR GROUP DISCUSSION:
  • The most important thing that candidate should follow is that they should listen to the instruction very very carefully.
  • Don't rush into the discussion, be patient  and start discussion only when G.T.O is over with his words.
  • Start the discussion only if you have a deep knowledge about the subject and you have a good communication skill else be patient and listen to the other speakers and make your decision.
  • Don't just try to speak but also try to listen all others.
  • You must have proper eye contact with each and every member of the group and never look up or down while saying.
  • Never and Never see towards the G.T.O.
  • Avoid person to person interaction i.e. dont involve with a particular person during the discussion. You may choose the point of a person but while expressing your view you should be general and adressing to the whole group.
  • Never point out a particular chest number while answering and questioning, although i recommend not to question at all.
  • Never point out using your fingers. This shows aggressive nature  of the speaker.
  • Remember the difference between a discussion and a debate.
  • Be loud and clear during the discussion.
  • Don't  loose your temper during the discussion.
  • Never change your side in between the discussion.
Some Secrets about the Group Discussion:
  • People think that no matter which topic you choose from the given lists of subjects by the G.T.O but i say that plays an important role. From the given list of subjects one subject will always be of utmost importance and you should prefer to that subject. But if then also your group is not willing to discuss that topic you should always try to convince them explaining the importance of the subject but never try to force them.Speak politely and be ready to go with the group because the G.T.O have taken notice of your ability to choose the more important among the important s.
  • Once the subject is chosen then comes the matter of deciding the side of the subject you should go i.e. either you should be favor or against the subject. What i suggest my friends is to go with the side to which side is the government as per the controversial subject is concerned. Why i am saying this is the government rules are decided by a panels of experts and also by the representatives of different regions and subjects. So it is expected that must be in favor of the nation.
If the subject is about social issues, then go with the noble side. Never support to the evils while deciding your side.
You should always be progressive in your thoughts and dont be orthodox and decide your side accordingly.

SELF DESCRIPTION TEST

Self  Description Test:

It is the last test under the Psychologist technique. In this test the candidate is given opportunity to give details by himself. By this, the assessors  wish to know you from you only.In this test the candidate has to write about himself according  to his close ones like his parents ,class mates and  peers. The time given for  this test is 15 minutes. So here also the candidate will have to be fast and spontaneous.

The response of the candidate for this test is forwarded to the interviewing officer who read this before the candidate enters in the interview room.So the candidate must be truthful and must write in the fair handwriting so the interviewing officer should not have any problem in reading the responses.Because in that case he will form a negative impression of yours.

Now the question arises that what is the use of such test? But the answer is very easy and deep. This test is based on the fact that the best judge of a person is the person itself.A person by himself knows better than anybody else about his strength and his weaknesses.A person who knows his strength will use it at the time it is needed and a person who knows his weaknesses can only try to overcome it.

The Test Scene:

During the test candidates have to write theier responses under four heads. They are:
  • What your parents say about you.
  • What your friends say about you.
  • What your teacher/boss/co workers say about you.
  • What you think of yourself.
The aim of this process is to assess the candidate i.e. whether he has the maturity to think and assess about them self or not.  It also gives the clear idea about oneself.  Since no body can able to tel about a person rather than the self.

 Preparation for Self Description:-

  1. Since it is like an released question paper before an exam, ask your parents, good friends, teachers about you and write it in a good paragraph.
  2. Try to write those set of paragraphs with in the stipulated time (10-15 mins)
  3. Also you think and write the good points about your parents, teachers and friends.
  4. Spend more time in writing the own self description about yourself and find the right positive and negative points about you.
  5. Try to do some works to overcome those negative points. Since the IO may ask you in the PI that what are the things you are doing to overcome your short comings.
  6. Try to give the correct information about you.  Don't bluff or tel lies.  As it lowers your chance of getting selected.
  7. Don't waste time by telling more about your native, school and all.  Try to show your true character in this.
Example for Self Description:-

Self Opinion:-
I am optimistic, candid, responsible boy.  I want to do my things successfully.  I am confident with my thinking and analysis that i can able to convince my surroundings with my points.  I used to do exercise regularly to keep myself fit.  The game now iam playing is table tennis.  My hobbies are blogging.  I want to satisfy my surrounding people upto my extent and want to keep them happy.
Things i want to improve is ,  i want to develop my technical skills, also i am working on that now by putting extra time

Friends Opinion:-
My friends say me as practical person as i put forward my points as outspoken.  They feel happy and secured when i am with them, since i can able to handle situations easily.  They like my helping tendency in education and all.

 Teachers Opinion:-
My teacher say me as an above average student in studies and good at obedience.  Also they like my participating attitude in extra curricular activities.  They say that i am good at mathematics and lovable person at class as i have lot of friends.

 Parents Opinion:-
My parents say me as responsible boy as i support my family after degree by going to job and also they have a lot of affection over me for giving them a good name in the society.  They have belief over me that i wiill achive my aim to become a officer in armed forces, and they are giving full support for me to achieve that.

SITUATION REACTION TEST

Situation Reaction Test:

This is the third test under the psychologist technique of assessment. It follows the Word Association Test.
This is a test of common sense and candidate's intelligence This test is nothing but only they want to know our reactions in different situation. The situation  given are very common and consists of different situation which we encounter in our daily life. What they expect from the candidate is being practical and spontaneous. The candidate should win over every situation in practical and normal way. They don't expect the candidate to behave like a superhero and solve the problem. Now comes the outcome of this test. Here again the same officer's like qualities are taken out from the candidates and the result is mapped with the result of WAT and TAT and also with the information provided in the PIQ. Again the report developed is forwarded to the interviewing officer who cross check the result.

Rules Of The Game:

This test is conducted in a big auditorium  where candidates are given a question booklet and an answer sheet with numberings from 1 to 60. Against each number 2 or 3 lines are provided to write the responses. The question booklet consist of 60 situation in form of questions. The candidate has give the reaction of the situation as per the space provided in the answer sheet against the correct serial number. The time given to the candidates to complete the test is 30 minutes. This means that the time given per situation is 30 seconds.
Once the test is started candidates are not allowed to ask any doubt.

Tips For Situation Reaction Test:

  • Be truthful,practical and spontaneous
  • Don't behave extraordinarily  which u will not do when you will be in same situation.
  • Feel as if you are facing the same situation.
  • Be short and exact in your responses as the time allotted is very less.
  • Your handwriting should be fair.
  • Never try to escape from the situation and also don't try to change the situation.
  • Show your true qualities.
  • Use telegraphic key words to answer the sentence as this saves time.
  • Don't lose in any situation , the candidate should not lose in any situation, so write logic response in which candidate should win in every situation.
  • Some situations may be repeated i.e. the meaning of the question is same but the way asked is vary.  So be constant in your thoughts and responses.
  • Don't show cowardliness or fear.  Be positive in your reaction.
  • Don't lose in any situation , the candidate should not lose in any situation, so write logic response in which candidate should win in every situation.

NOTE: SRT is nat a test of your ability to write but is a test to measure your ability to think ,observe and  react in a given situation. So to make you spontaneous and fair the time is kept small and they intentionally try to impose pressure on you to solve as much as possible. But the fact is that they also know that it is almost impossible for a fair person to read  the situation and write its response in just 30 sec. So in this test only quality matters not the quantity. The candidate should try to give quality answers.

WORD ASSOCIATION TEST

Word Association Test(WAT):

It is also a one of the technique of the psychologist to assess the personality of the candidates. In this test, psychologist wants to know that how the candidate associate any word. This is based on the same principle of the subconscious mind. When a particular word is shown to a candidate the first thought that will come to his mind is always based upon his past experience and his association with the word.In this test also, the psychologist judges the same qualities inside the candidates.
Here also candidates must be truthful because the report prepared by the psychologist is mapped with the information given in the PIQ form filled by the candidate, and that must have a certain degree of resemblance. Also the same report is forwarded to the interviewing officer  who will judge the validity in his own ways.
So the candidate must be truthful and honest in their response. At the same time they should be spontaneous and exact.

Rules Of The Game:

This test is conducted in the same auditorium as of the thematic Appreciation test (TAT) just after TAT is finished. In this test a series of words is shown on the projector one by one and the candidate is asked to write a sentence that first comes to his mind after seeing that picture. Each word is displayed for 15 seconds. That is in 15 seconds the candidate has to see the picture ,form an association/sentence and has to write the sentence.

For the conduction of this test, candidate are provided with a sheet of paper imprinted with serial number from 1 to 60 with a ruled line against each number. The candidate is expected to write the sentence against the correct number only.

When the test starts, after every 10 word, the instructor will announce like 10th word,or 20th word,....till 60th word .This is done to make candidate sure that they are in correct sequence as per the word and number.
No doubt is cleared once the test is started, hence the candidates are advised to clear all their doubt before the test starts.

Facts about WAT:

This test is conducted under pressure of time only to make candidates spontaneous  so that real personality of his/her could come out.The candidate must be spontaneous and honest. Also, there are certain negative words in the test which are intentionally kept in certain ratio to know the responses of the candidates for such words.

Tips for writing the sentences:
  • Most common and important tip for WAT is to be honest and spontaneous.
  • Try to make positive sentences.
  • Try to use the same form of the word, but it is not cumpolsory.
  • It is not even important that the word exist in the sentence, but avoid such sentences.
  • Do not give morals and advice in the sentences.
  • Do not use should,would,could,etc...
  • Don't leave any word as this gives direct  meaning of empty mind, but it is better to leave than to make meaningless sentences.
  • Don't repeat the  same sentence for different words.
  • don't give remembered responses.
  • Responses must be in past or present.
  • Don't use any idioms or universal truth or famous  quotes given by someone as it doesn't reflects your response.
  • Don't use pronouns like he,she,they,etc.... but you are free to use " I ".
  • It is a better place to show your knowledge and qualities, don't  miss this chance.
  • Last but not the least-----"HAND WRITING MUST BE CLEAR"

THEMATIC APPRECIATION TEST

Thematic Appreciation test:
this is a projection test or in simple words it is a test of the candidate's  imagination. This test is based on the fact that the  imagination of a person completely depends on the experience of a person which is stored in the the subconscious mind.Whatever the person see around himself, may be ignored by the conscious mind but is taken by the subconscious mind. This saved experience is reflected in this test.

This test is conducted in a big hall where all the candidates are allowed to sit together and a series of pictures are shown to them. There are total of 11 pictures shown to candidates and the candidates  have to write the stories around the pictures depending upon their own perception. To activate the imagination of the candidate the pictures are kept hazy.Once these 11 pictures are over,a blank picture is shown.Candidates have to write the story on their own seeing an imaginary picture.
Through the stories written by the candidate the assessors extracts the hidden thoughts of the candidate, his qualities, his behavior in certain conditions, his risk taking abilities,etc...
The candidates are warned to be truthful because the outcome of these result is mapped with the information given in the PIQ and must have a certain degree of resemblance. The picture doesn't ends here, the report prepared by the psychologist is forwarded to the interviewing officer who cross check the validity of the result with his own technique. So it becomes impossible to hide yourself from these assessors.

Rules Of The Game:
As explained, there will be 11 pictures followed by a blank one will be shown. Each picture will be shown for for 30 seconds and after 30 sec is over, the picture will be removed and candidates will be given 3-4 minutes to write the story. This way,all pictures will be shown one by one.

Tips for success:
  • Observe the picture carefully and decide the central character that is the  hero of your story.
  • decide the age , mood , sex , of the hero.
  • give a name to the hero.
  • After the central character, observe the surrounding  and the background of the picture.
  • Once you observe the surrounding, make a theme of your story in su8ch a way that it resemble with the surrounding and the mood of the hero.
  • after deciding the theme, narrate your story around the picture.
  • Be positive in your story
Things to be kept in mind:

While writing the story, candidate must keep certain facts in their mind. The most important thing is that the story reflects you in the story,so always keep yourself in the picture and narrate the story in the way you will react in the situation.Don't take any extra ordinary situation and solve it in a superman way.your story should be normal and your hero as well.Through the story you have to show your own qualities and abilities.Action going on in your story should be normal like in everyday life.Story should not jump from one situation to other and it should be circulating around the picture.

Story should be written describing what led to the picture, what is going on in the picture and what happened after that.
Hence, the story has three parts. The first part is written in past tense to describe what led to the picture. The second part of the story  is written in the continuous tense to explain what is happening in the situation/picture and the last part of the story is again written in the past to describe what happened after that.

You may add supporting character in the story but not let that character overcome you hero and use him to show the coordinating  nature of your hero.

Do's and Don't  for writing the story:

  • Write the story on social problems that are very common in daily life and make your hero to fight such situation.
  • Always write a positive story.
  • Convert a negative story in a positive one.
  • Try to name your hero in accordance with your story. e.g. if your story  consist of rural background, then try to name your hero likewise.
  • Make your story continuous. Don't jump.
  • Don't try to relate all the story with armed forces as this gives very poor impression of yours and shows that you have been polished.
  • Don't use your own name and city in the story. In fact try not to use any particular name of a city.Just say in city and also dont use XYZ etc..
  •   Don't describe the picture.
  • Don't give moral or advice in the story.
  • NEVER AND NEVER MAKE ANY PRE PLANNED STORY FOR ANY OF THE PICTURE ESPECIALLY  FOR THE BLANK PICTURE.

PSYCHOLOGY TEST

The Psychology Test:

This is an important test of the selection procedures. This test is either conducteed on the same day of screening or may be at the second day. This test is conducted by skilled persons who is able to discover the real personality of a person.During this test, the candidate must keep in mind that the officers who are conducting this test are far more intelligent and experience enough to extract the real trait of the candidate.

this test is are conducted in different forms which very easily take the real men in front of them.So the candidate must be true to himself and don't ever try to fool the assessors .They will very easily find the truth.
the only and only way to excel these test is to be very truthful.

SCREENING TEST

SCREENING TEST:

The screening test (ST) is at first day of the process. The ST comprises of Intelligence questions or Officer Intelligence (O.I.R) and P.P.D.T. Picture Perception and Description Test.  These are aimed to find out the analyzing ability of the candidate and to gauge their inner mind potential. Its the first test conducted in the ssb procedures.

What is Intelligence?

Intelligence is defined as the inner ability of the candidate to solve particular problem i.e. aptitude, reasoning etc.  Officer Intelligence Rating refers to solve set of problems which consists of both verbal and nonverbal reasoning. intelligence is not only about solving a particular problem but it also contains the ability to decide to which one is to be left.At ssb candidate has to solve as many problem as possible. So the candidate must be able to discover his ability to solve and should not waste time on problem which he is finding is difficult.
There are two types of test conducted in this section.
1) verbal intelligence test
2) Non verbal intelligence test

Syllabus covered under Verbal Reasoning :-
  • Analogy and Classification.
  • Coding - Decoding.
  • Number Series.
  • Blood Relations.
  • Direction .
  • Seating Arrangement.
  • Puzzles.
  • Basic mathematical aptitude.
Syllabus covered under Non-Verbal Reasoning:-
  • Analogy and Classification of figures.
  • Complete and Incomplete Pattern of figures
  • Cubes and Dice
  • Venn Diagram (simple one).

P.P.D.T. - Picture Perception and Description Test:-

P.P.D.T  is a projection test, which is a part of the screening.  In this, the candidates are shown a hazy picture for duration of 30 seconds and the candidate has to write down a story in 3 minutes by noting down the basic seven parameters such as
  • Age
  • Sex
  • Character
  • Mood
  • Past (what he done)
  • Present (what is going on in the story)
  • Future (what will he do)
          How it is conducted:-

The candidate are advised to sit in a big auditorium.   Then the psychologist gives instruction about the P.P.D.T.  A hazy picture is projected from the projector for 30 seconds by switching off the light.  In this hazy picture the candidate has to note down the basic seven parameters as i described above.  Then they should think a constructive/positive story in mind to write. After writing the story the candidates are ordered to sit in a semi circle and discuss about their own stories.  The President of the board, G.T.O , the psychologist sit there to select the students for the rest of the four days.

Before writing, there is one thing that, a square box is printed in the psychological answer sheet.  In which the candidate should mark as who is the central character, whats his age, whats his mood, what led to the situation (past), what is going on in the situation (present), and what will happen at the end (future).
  1. Never look at the officials while narration of the story or while engaging in the discussion.
  2. Speak out your story with confidence.
